The year was 1977. The scene was the old Dillon Raceway when it was still dirt. Cotten Gray was the promoter. It was the month of May and Cotten had scheduled "THE HOT DOG 150". A late model race paying $2,000 to win, almost unheard of at that time. The race was to be run on Saturday Night, but got rained out. The race was to be run on Sunday afternoon. Dillon was one of the few tracks you could run in the daytime with very little dust. Some of the best were there to win that two grand. Freddy Smith, Rodney Combs, and Buck Simmons were on hand. These three went in the Dirt Track Hall of Fame on the first ballot. Some of the late models were just beginning to run the camaro bodies at that time. Of the twenty four cars that took the green flag, 18 broke the track record. There were some real hoss's at Dillon that day. Rodney Coombs had the pole with what is still the record for the dirt track at 17:68. He was racing out of Lost Creek, West Virginia at the time. There was a local boy out of Mullins named J.D. Pridgen who had begun to drive late model for Jay Asbill from Lake View. J.D. Had run a long time for Harold Lambert in the Hobby Class at Myrtle Beach. I don't remember where J.D. Started, but from the drop of the green, Coombs was clearly the man to beat. With 3 laps left to run, Coombs got caught up in some slow traffic on the inside groove. J.D. Pridgen went to the high side for the lead. When Coombs got clear, he drove the wheels off that number 5 car, but he didn't have enough time to catch the hard charging Pridgen. The next you see J.D., ask him about the Day in May, 1977 when he beat some of the best in the world.
